8-port HDMI KVM Choices

(Note: Due to limits on URLs in the post, I intentionally broke the last URL...)

    Hi,
As my first post to the forum, I thought I'd contribute a list I compiled...

(Why did I do this? https://github.com/tiny-pilot/tinypilot/wiki/KVM-compatibility could use updating and expanding, ESPECIALLY with TinyPilot testing products, only two "Verified by TinyPilot", no "Full compatibility" for "Verified by TinyPilot" and 8-port, too few total entries as well...)

My use case: KVM access to my 8 (Raspberry Pi) devices
    My original criteria included:

    • Under $150
    • 8-port (of course) or more (for <$150?)
    • Hotkey support
    • Less wiring (e.g., USB-powered, single-wire-per-devive)

This is a basic summary of some choices I found. This is NOT exhaustive, just started with Amazon search of <$150 for "8-port HDMI KVM" - and Amazon's search SUCKS, no quote or boolean support - so I could have easily missed many! Also, only Prime, so can return them... Also, I'm US-based.

If you've tried any/all of these and/or others, please do tell me more, tell me more! (Even if it did NOT work! Even if you returned it!)
Ideally, please sharre: Your use case(s), your # and types of device(s), your method(s) for switching devices, your TinyPilot/other setup(s), your price(s), current Amazon link(s) and/or other purchase link(s), your challenge(s) in setup, and your overall experience.

    • The first three seem like they'd be the best options for TinyPilot since they state they support HOTKEYS
    • Some support RS232, so perhaps they might be easy to integrate, but I prefer the hotkey approach for simplicity and easy of setup
    • Some have separate USB ports (and thus ask for separate USB cables) which can mean a messier setup
    • Some are USB-powered, some use an external power supply. (USB power supposedly means lower video resolution, 1920 and 30Hz is fine for my use case.)
    • Some are rack-sized (but don't require a rack), some are much smaller
    • Some have "adaptive EDID" (not sure of the value, I only noted it once)
    • None met "all" my criteria, the cabling was least important

    Now, to the list...

Hi Bruce, thanks for sharing your research!

Using an additional KVM to manage multiple target computers from a single TinyPilot device is an efficient choice, but, as you've observed, finding a suitable KVM can be tricky!

We're a small company, so unfortunately, testing a wide range of third-party KVMs is impractical. As a result, we're always grateful when customers share compatibility reports with us, and I'll watch this thread with interest!

Thanks again, and please let me know if you have any questions.

Yep, would love for TinyPilot to check out the top few to add that checkmark :-) but fully understand about small co.

The Steetek and Greathtek KVMs are most likely identical. I'm curious as to whether the Tinypilot virtual storage function would work with the Tinypilot connected to the K/M ports on the KVM (necessary for the hotkey switching function to work).

            1. Hi Gene, thanks for your message about KVMs.

Some KVMs are indeed rebadged versions of other KVMs, but they can often have subtle hardware differences or ship with customized firmware. I'd recommend assuming that compatibility reports only apply to the exact make and model tested.

TinyPilot presents itself to a target computer as a composite USB device, similar to a USB hub, consisting of a keyboard, mouse, and storage device. KVM compatibility with this approach varies, and unfortunately, their documentation often doesn't specify whether composite devices are supported.

I'd recommend choosing a KVM that another user has already confirmed works or purchasing from a vendor that would allow you to test their KVM and return it if it isn't compatible.
